Menopausal status alone does not establish lower work ability

Across 10 observational studies of working women, menopausal status was not consistently associated with work ability. Findings concerning vasomotor symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats, and other menopause-related symptoms were mixed. The evidence did not establish menopausal status alone as the cause of poorer work outcomes.

Systematic review of observational studies. 10 eligible studies with at least 100 women each; nine cross-sectional and one longitudinal.

Boundary

Nine of the 10 studies were cross-sectional, every study had a high risk of bias in at least one assessed area, and only six adjusted for potential confounding factors. Differences in study design prevented the researchers from calculating a pooled effect estimate.
